Harvesting Spider Silk for Everyday Use | The Henry Ford's Innovation Nation
In this segment of The Henry Ford's Innovation Nation, Alie Ward meets with the co-founders of Spidey Tek, a biotech company dedicated to the mass production of spider silk and its use in everyday applications. Scientists have known for many decades that silk made by spiders is one of the world's strongest natural materials, but understanding how to harvest it has been a significant challenge. Spidey Tek has discovered the answers to producing large quantities of spider silk that can be used in many applications and products. Through genetic engineering, they have been able to produce the protein that spiders make in nature and apply it to other forms. Potential applications for this spider silk are vast, and include automotive materials, sponges, adhesives, and coatings. Like, share, and subscribe!
