Film School with Mark Vargo, ASC: Grip it Good
What is a Best Boy? A Gaffer? A Grip? Mark Vargo, ASC, award-winning DP and VFX film professional, goes to the beginning of the scene - with the grip department. Back in the day, Sailors, Cowboys, Loggers, Carpenters, Circus and Stage Riggers were the grip department; securing knots, building safe platforms for lights and camera personnel, and dolly tracks laid on inhospitable ground. Whenever anything goes awry on set, the grip department is who everyone looks to first. These are our "first responders" and NO movie can be made without them.
