Hello, today we’ll be discussing the Battle of Oshi Castle. The year was 1590, the 18th year of the Tenshō era. As the final step in his quest to unify the country, Toyotomi Hideyoshi laid siege to Odawara Castle, the stronghold of the Hōjō clan. Amidst the Siege of Odawara, there was one battle that stood out from the rest. The Battle of Oshi Castle in Musashi Province. Oshi Castle was one of the Hojo clan’s outposts. The attacking force was led by Ishida Mitsunari and the Toyotomi army. In terms of both manpower and resources, the Toyotomi forces were supposed to have an overwhelming advantage. However, Oshi Castle did not fall easily. Mitsunari attempted a water siege, surrounding the castle with water. To achieve this, the Ishida Embankment was constructed. It was a large-scale operation designed to dam up water and immobilize the castle. However, due to the terrain, the flow of the water, natural levees, and the breach of the embankment, the plan did not go as intended, and Oshi Castle came to be known as a castle that remained afloat despite being surrounded by water. Why did Oshi Castle not fall? Was Ishida Mitsunari truly a poor strategist? What went wrong with the water siege?
