Running is Healthier than Cycling? Jimmy Whelan's Switch to Pro Running & 2028 Olympics Chase

Jimmy Whelan raced the Giro d'Italia, wore the EF Education First jersey in the World Tour, and beat Pogačar in a U23 race. Then he broke his pelvis, lost his contract, and messaged his boss from a hospital bed in Europe to say he was done. Less than a year later, he ran a 61-minute half marathon on his professional running debut at Valencia, 13th on the Australian all-time list. He's now signed with Salomon, based in Barcelona, coached by Andy Henderson (also coach to Phil Sessemann), and openly chasing the Australian Olympic marathon team for LA 2028. In this episode, Jessy Carveth sits down with Jimmy to talk about: • Why he walked away from pro cycling after 8 years • How cycling built an engine that's tailor-made for the marathon • Training doubles, 200km+ weeks, and learning to manage load as a new runner • The Berlin half marathon blow-up and what he learned from failing publicly • His marathon debut plans and his 2028 Olympic ambitions Whether you're a competitive runner, a cycling fan, or just love a great comeback story, this one's for you. 0:00 Introduction 0:21 Jimmy's Story: From Runner to Cyclist to Runner 1:40 Where He's Training Now & Daily Doubles 2:33 How It All Started: School Running, Cycling, and Coming Back 3:45 The Valencia Half Marathon Breakthrough 4:42 Breaking His Pelvis on Contract Year & Coming Back Stronger 6:59 The Triathlon Detour 8:25 Why He Went Harder After Retiring From Cycling 10:30 Running a 61-Minute Half in Year One 12:09 What He's Still Learning: Tapering & Fuelling 13:47 Cycling Pain vs Running Pain 14:51 The Berlin Half Marathon Blow-Up 17:32 What He Wishes He Knew Sooner 19:06 Working With Coach Andy Henderson 20:48 High Mileage, Stress Reactions & the Importance of Rest 23:46 How 8 Years of Cycling Built His Marathon Engine 25:14 Body Composition Changes: Cyclist vs Runner 28:21 How He Still Uses the Bike as a Runner 30:10 Should Everyday Runners Cross-Train on the Bike? 33:27 The Bike as a Recovery Tool 35:02 Living in Andorra: Solitude & the Monk Mentality 37:30 Why He Chose Barcelona as His Base 38:30 Being a Rookie Again After Beating Pogačar 40:21 How He Blocks Out External Noise 43:09 Marathon Debut Plans 45:06 Target Marathon Time 47:11 Race Calendar & Road to the Olympics 48:37 LA 2028 Olympic Ambitions 51:14 Why He Signed With Salomon 52:40 Product Testing & Shoe R&D 53:56 His Shoe Rotation 55:32 Advice for Everyday Runners 57:15 What Does Success Look Like in 5 Years?
