Radio Opole - powódź 1997 r.

Flood 1997. Despite the natural disaster, Radio Opole broadcasts continuously. The flood wave reached Opole on the morning of July 10th. Metalchem, Zaodrze, Bolko Island, and Pasieka were flooded. The Radio Opole headquarters on Strzelców Bytomskich Street also suffered damage. However, our reporters constantly updated residents on the current situation from a makeshift studio in the Telecommunications building. Watch a video with archived recordings from 1997. The radio became practically the only source of information about the situation in the region – despite the natural disaster, it broadcast continuously. It reported not only information from reporters but also from flood control committees and directly from listeners. The station provided information on what was missing and where those most in need were. Information was provided about threats and locations where drinking water, food, and medicine were being distributed. The radio became a kind of contact box – listeners passed on letters with information for their loved ones, whom they couldn't reach. After a week, the water began to recede, and the damage to the radio was enormous – all installations and equipment on the ground floor were destroyed. The damage could have been much worse if not for the efforts of employees who protected the station's property from flooding. Watch a video with archival recordings from 1997.
