The Engishiki was compiled in the 5th year of Enchō (927) during the late Heian period, consists of 50 volumes, and is a standard for the implementation of court ceremonies and administration. This shrine is listed in Volume 10 of the Engishiki among 18 shrines in Bitchu Province, and it is a fact that it was a shrine revered by the imperial court. Our shrine is said to have been founded in the 54th year of Emperor Sujin's reign, but during the Engi and Enchō eras, this shrine was recorded as Nagatayama in Shimomichi District, Bitchū Province, and there are many legends of gods associated with that place name. According to an ancient book called Yamato-hime Seiki, Emperor Sujin commanded Toyosukiirihime-no-Mikoto to "find a suitable place to enshrine the sacred mirror, which is the divine object of Amaterasu Ōmikami," and it is recorded that she moved it from Nakusahama Palace in Kii Province to Nagakatahama Palace in Bitchū Province (present-day Anamon-yama Shrine) and enshrined it there for four years. This shows the deep reverence the imperial court had for our shrine. The enshrined deities are Amaterasu Ōmikami, Ukanomitama Ōkami (also known as Toyouke Ōkami), and four other deities: Ashinakatsuhiko-no-Mikoto, the second son of Yamato Takeru, and Anamon Takehime-no-Mikoto, the daughter of Kibitakehiko and consort of Yamato Takeru. The shrine building, which was destroyed by fire in the autumn of 1632, was rebuilt and donated in 1637 by Ikeda Izumo-no-kami Nagatsune, lord of Bitchu Matsuyama Castle. It is built in the Gongen-zukuri architectural style, and the gable end of the main hall, in particular, is highly decorative with its gable ornaments, rainbow beams, brackets, and bracket systems, making it a rare example in the prefecture and a designated prefectural cultural property. The surrounding shrine grove is a designated prefectural natural monument, and according to a survey conducted in October 1930 by Professor Zentaro Tashiro of Kyoto University, 438 species of plants were recorded, attracting attention for its diverse plant life. The sacred katsura tree is estimated to be 700 years old, with a circumference of 8.93 meters and a height of 30 meters. The sacred trees are the large cedar tree at the top of the stone steps near the main gate and the katsura tree at the bottom of the cliff within the shrine grounds.
