In fact, his design was based on Thomas Newcomen's design. Newcomen's steam engine could only apply force in one direction on a straight line. It was usually used to pull coal from the underground, or to pump water. Watt made a lot of improvements on his design, including the use of a separate condenser to improve efficiency, using a double-piston design to allow applying force in two directions, and using gears to convert linear motion to rotational motion. If you look closely at Watt's drawing (1：00), you will find that my animation is actually greatly simplified.
