The Old Tin Hut - Overnight Tramp in Kahurangi National Park

Sam and Harry go on an overnight tramping trip to the Old Tin Hut Shelter in Kahurangi National Park. This is a very basic but iconic hut/shelter that serves as a unique overnight camping spot. This is a great walk up the Waingaro Track (Kill Devil Track) which is located near Takaka. It involves a fair bit of climbing but it is a unique area with great history. This tramp took around 3.5hrs on the way up and 2.5 hrs on the way down. There is the option to proceed deeper in to the Waingaro and Anatoki valleys to Riordans Hut and Lake Stanley and beyond if you have the time. The bird life is great with local friendly South Island Robin (Kakaruwai) near the hut. Access is via a short gravel road near between Upper and Lower Takaka. There isn't a lot of water along this track so come prepared. There is a water tank at the hut but that is about it.
