Exploring A. Z. Phizo Hide Out Cave and Rani Gaidinliu Cave | Historical Caves in Puilwa Village

Dr. Angami Zhaou Phizo hailing from Khonoma village, was Naga Nationalist leader, under whose leadership the Naga National Council fought for our right to self-determination. On 2nd August 1965, A. Z. Phizo came to Puilwa village with his encounter, the Indian Army on learning of his presence in the village surrounded the village, and was about to capture the morung where Phizo was present. His personal security officer by name Zakhevilie shot down the first military personal to enter the morung door to seal the escape of NNC personals. Meanwhile with the aid of the villagers Phizo slipped away through the back door of the morung and came and halted in the cave located between present New and Old Puilwa village for the night. Here on, he moved to Pulomi (Poilwa) village and also left for London the same year in December 1956. Conquest upon his escape the Indian Army personals burnt the whole village to ashes, for which, the whole populace of the village had to survive in the jungle for almost a year. Thereby, resulting in lost of countless lives to cholera and other diseases, which is ultimate responsible for the decline in the population of the Puilwa Community. Rani Gaidinliu was a spiritual and political leader who, led the revolt against British rule in India. Rani Gaidinliu with hundreds of her followers came to Puilwa village in October 1932. The villagers warmly welcomed the entourage to the village, with merry making by singing, dancing and playing various traditional sports and games. The villagers donated ornaments and animals like mithun, Buffalo, cow, pig, etc. and hosted the festivity. The cave in the Northeast of present Old Puilwa village was used as her secret hideout during her stay in the village and she forbade the villagers not to disclose about this cave to anyone for future use in times of necessity. Unfortunately, as she proceeded further east, she was arrested by the British - India Government led by Captain MC Donald from (Pulomi) Poilwa village on 17th October 1932. Thereafter, she was imprisoned for 14 years till India got her independence.
