Yaifeh Chafeh - Cannabis and Psychedelics Part 1

COURSE TITLE: Cannabis and Psychedelics: Understanding Effects, Risks, Abuse, and Treatment in a Legal Age - Part 1 OVERVIEW: Cannabis and psychedelics are at the forefront of public and scientific interest due to evolving legal landscapes, rising use, and emerging research. This presentation explores what the latest evidence reveals about their short- and long-term physical and mental effects, including cognitive and cardiovascular impacts from cannabis and psychological sequelae related to psychedelics. We'll discuss how legalization can coincide with increases in use and disorder, challenging the assumption that legality equals safety, and consider the implications for public health, diagnosis, and treatment. Finally, we'll review current treatment research, highlighting advances and ongoing challenges in addressing cannabis abuse and the therapeutic potential (and risks) of psychedelics. OBJECTIVES: Participants will be able to: Analyze how legal status intersects with risks of abuse, including cannabis use disorder (CUD) and other adverse outcomes. Evaluate current treatment approaches and research on interventions for problematic cannabis and psychedelic experiences. Differentiate short-term and long-term physical and mental effects of cannabis and psychedelic use, based on scientific evidence.
