Serenje Kalindula - Umwana Wanshiwa - Zambian Single (Lala, 1987)

For this recording we have Serenje Kalundula on a single on the Kariba label from 1987. The song, Umwana Wanshiwa, also appears on side A of the Maxi single (12 inch 45 rpm record) KARI 1202. Apologies for the noisy condition. This is the only full single record that has appeared in the collector market. The maxi single is just about as rare as this one. This is the best copy available right now. This copy looks like someone stored it with their rock collection and is pretty scratched up. The music stands out regardless of the damage, however. The Serenje Kalindula Band has a long a storied history. Starting out with their founding in the Zambian town of Serenje around 1976, their first album, Amanyamune, was released in 1979 under the Zambia Music Parlour label. By 1992, band members included: Syman Kaseba - Vocals, Lead/rhythm guitar Patson Makolingo Chisenga - Vocals, lead/rhythm/bass guitar George Sombaso - Band Manager/Drums Victor Shakwenda - Vocals, Rythm/Lead guitar Hyden Chabakola - Bass Guitar/Drums The band established themselves as a popular Kalindula band that mixed lively Kalindula tunes with the dance rhythms of the Lala people who lived in the Serenje area. They would continue to be a solid Kalindula act throughout the 80's releasing a number of singles and four more albums into the mid 1990's. According to Leonard Koloko, following the death of the Zambian recording industry in the early 90s, the band did not survive into the new millennium. Sadly, many of the band members were victims of the AIDS epidemic, and none remain alive today.
