I’ll Knit If I Want To: Episode 267
Welcome to I’ll Knit (& Spin!) If I want To! I asked y’all to send in some of your questions (from everything from fiber arts, to designing and on!) so I could put together a little video for y’all every Friday doing my best to answer your questions! Check out Thanks, I made it! Here: • Thanks, I made it! Sign up for my newsletter here: Sign up for the DRK Newsletter: http://eepurl.com/diPxsr 1. I love the folded brim on the Harlow flip. I've already knit the Harlow hat, but not long enough to fold up. Can you knit the Harlow hat longer to accommodate a fold up (not matching the colors), or is there a major structural difference between the Harlow and the Harlow flip? 2. Hi Andrea! I just started the Comebackigan and was knitting my pockets/swatches. I didn’t make gauge with a US5, but did make gauge with a US4. So, for the ribbing, the pattern says to use two sizes smaller needles for the ribbing. And here’s my question: the pattern uses a US5/3.75mm for body and US3/3.25mm for ribbing. If I use a US4/3.5mm for the body, what should I use for the ribbing? Should I use a US2/2.75mm, as that’s 2 full US sizes smaller, OR a US2.5/3mm, that’s 0.5 mm smaller? Since the original was 2 full US sizes smaller AND 0.5 mm, I wasn’t sure which would be the better choice. Thank you for sharing your thoughts; appreciate you! 3. yarn stubs- I often find myself with a pattern I'd like to knit, but with yarn that is off in stitch count...say the pattern calls for a 20 st/4 inch and I want to use a yarn that is 24 st/4 inch. Provided the yarn is appropriate weight/drape/etc for the pattern, is there a way to calculate new instruction based on the desired yarn stitch count? I hope that makes sense. 4. Hi Andrea. I have a question about duplicate stitch. I’ve knit a cardigan that has some Fair Isle designs on the body using 4 different colours. I’m ready to block the cardigan but I’ve noticed that I have made some mistakes where I’ve done a few stitches in the wrong colour. I figured I could correct these by duplicate stitching the right colour over the wrong colour. My question - should I do the duplicate stitching before or after I block the cardigan? I’m worried that if I do it before blocking, I may duplicate stitch too tightly and then that stitch will pucker when I do block. What do you think? Any other tips you have on duplicate stitching would also be appreciated! Thank you! Ps I am loving your ‘thanks I made it’ series :o) 5. I knit the Shifty sweater several years back, and have found a similar issue when I'm knitting other sweater/cardigans. After blocking, the sweater has more of a slight A line shape to it. I attempted to block it straight, but instead it bloomed out at the bottom and am not sure how to avoid this in the future, as it has happened with other garments I've made. Is my ribbing too loose? Has my tension relaxed as I knit? I find that if I make gauge with a swatch, sometimes my knits are larger post-blocking. What could I be doing wrong? Secondly, if knits bloom after blocking some, and you want a sweater to be 20" long for example, where do you stop to accommodate this?
