In 2023 Ness gardens celebrated its 125th birthday and also 75 years as a University botanic garden. Created by Arthur Kilpin Bulley who was one of 14 children to a Liverpool cotton trader and had a passion for plants, in particular rare alpines and hardier plants. Having outgrown his garden in West Kirby Arthur bought farmland in Ness in 1898 to create most of what we see today. After many happy years at Ness Arthur passed away in 1942 and his daughter Agnes Lois bought her brother Alfred's share of the house and estate in 1948. Lois, as Agnes Lois preferred to be known, then presented the gardens to the University of Liverpool alongside an endowment. The declaration of trust between Lois and the University of Liverpool required that the University maintain and keep Ness forever as a public park and flower garden. https://www.parksandgardens.org/place... https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/ness-gard... https://www.visitcheshire.com/things-... https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/ness-gard... https://historicengland.org.uk/listin... https://www.visitwirral.com/listing/n...
