In 2014, Sony Pictures Animation almost made a Super Mario Brothers movie. The movie was the brainchild of Sony Pictures, specifically Avi Arad, trying to court Nintendo to partner on the film for over five years. Through the negotiations, Sony also tried to get Nintendo to give them the movie rights to Super Smash Brothers and Pokemon.
