Following the closure of the former Japan National Railways Takachiho Line, the line is operated as a third-sector railway company funded by Miyazaki Prefecture and other entities. The line sustained extensive damage from a typhoon in September 2005, causing the entire line to be suspended. However, the private company and residents along the line are currently working tirelessly to revive it.
