Bruises TOur (Challenges encountered at the Bamenda Lap Of The Tour)
The Bruises National Tour had traveled across Cameroon—from Bandjoun to Bertoua, from Yaoundé to Ngaoundéré. But Bamenda was different. Bamenda was home. And coming home with an album about gender-based violence meant facing the people who knew your story before you ever wrote a single poem. This documentary captures the raw, emotional, and often overwhelming journey of bringing "Bruises" to the North West Region—a homecoming that tested every ounce of courage we had. 🚧 THE CHALLENGES: 1. The Weight of Home Bamenda was not just another stop on the tour. It was the place where Mottanni's journey began. The place where family, friends, and old neighbors would be in the audience. The place where the ghosts of the past still lingered. Performing "Bruises" here meant baring your soul to the people who knew you before you became an artist. It meant being vulnerable in front of those who had seen your own bruises. The pressure was immense. 2. The Ghosts of the Past Every street in Bamenda held a memory. Every face in the crowd carried a story. For Mottanni and the team, returning to this landscape meant confronting the very experiences that inspired the album. The poems that were written in safe, distant spaces suddenly felt raw and exposed. There was nowhere to hide. The art had to be honest, and honesty demanded everything. 3. The Anglophone Crisis Context Bamenda, like much of the North West Region, has been shaped by years of crisis. The city bears the scars of conflict. Curfews, uncertainty, and fear have become part of daily life. Bringing a message of hope and healing to a community still navigating trauma was both a privilege and a profound responsibility. How do you speak of bruises when an entire region is bruised? How do you offer healing when the wounds are still open? 4. The Gathering of the Community In a city where movement is restricted and fear is ever-present, gathering people for an event is a monumental challenge. People are cautious. People are tired. Convincing them to come out—to sit in a room and listen to poetry about pain—required trust, patience, and the support of local partners who believed in the mission. Every person who walked through the door was a small miracle. 5. The Emotional Toll on the Team The artists and crew had been on the road for weeks. Fatigue was setting in. But Bamenda was different. The emotional weight of performing in a hometown context drained everyone in ways they hadn't anticipated. Tears were shed backstage. Hugs were held longer. The mask of professionalism slipped, and the raw humanity of the mission took over. 6. The Perfect Sound (Against All Odds) And yet, against all odds, the sound system in Bamenda was flawless. Clear. Powerful. It carried the words into the hearts of the audience. It made sure that every whisper, every scream, every tear-filled line was heard. In a city that has heard so much pain, the sound of art—pure, unfiltered, and beautiful—was a form of resistance. 🎤 THE PERFORMANCE: When the lights dimmed and the first poem began, something shifted. The audience wasn't just listening; they were witnessing. They were feeling. For two hours, the space became a sanctuary where pain could be spoken aloud and healing could begin. The poets, musicians, and beatboxers gave everything they had. The audience responded with applause, tears, and standing ovations. This was not just a show. It was a reunion. A confession. A homecoming. 🙏 GRATITUDE: To the people of Bamenda: Thank you for showing up. Thank you for trusting us with your hearts. Your presence was our strength. To our local partners: Thank you for believing in this mission when the road was uncertain. Your support made this possible. To the artists who shared the stage: Your courage inspired us all. To the Cameroonian cultural network of CLAC Yaoundé and our international sponsors: Thank you for standing with us through every challenge. 💬 FINAL THOUGHTS: Bamenda taught us that coming home is not always easy. It is not always comfortable. But it is always necessary. Because home is where the story begins. And the story of "Bruises" began here. This is the story of how a movement returned to its roots and found its strength.
