Trains at Nuneaton, WCML (02/03/2023)

VIDEO: A couple of hours on a chilly but sunny afternoon at Nuneaton station on the West Coast Main Line, featuring Avanti West Coast class 221s and 390s, London Northwestern Railway class 350s, Freightliner, GB Railfreight, DB Cargo UK and Direct Rail Services (DRS) class 66s, Direct Rail Services (DRS) class 88s, a GBRf class 50 hauling an Avanti West Coast class 805 and a Rail Operations Group class 37 hauling a C2C class 720. Nuneaton station is the primary station for the town of Nuneaton, Warwickshire. The station first opened in 1847, as part of the Trent Valley Railway line between Rugby and Stafford, a diversionary route that allowed fast trains between London and the north west to avoid the busy centre of Birmingham. Three years later, a short branch line was built from Coventry, allowing a connection between the Trent Valley and West Midlands sections of the line. In 1924, the station was renamed to 'Nuneaton Trent Valley', as a way of separating it from the second station in the area, 'Nuneaton Midland' on the Midland line between Birmingham and Leicester, which was renamed to 'Nuneaton Abbey Street'. Following the closure of Abbey Street station in 1968, services between Birmingham and Leicester were transferred over to the Trent Valley station, which was renamed back to 'Nuneaton' the following year. In the 2000s, in an effort to lessen the impact of Birmingham-Leicester services having to cross over the busy West Coast Main Line before the station, a disused flyover north of the station was reinstated and two new platforms; platforms 6 & 7 were built and opened in 2004. By this point, Virgin Trains's loco-hauled stock were being replaced with new class 390 Pendolino trains and Network Rail had already begun works to upgrade the entire line to run faster and more frequent services. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THANKS FOR WATCHING!
