During a high-stakes prizefight between Bill Steele and Frankie Stanton, Stanton is knocked out and dies shortly after, initially appearing to be an accident. However, Mr. Moto uncovers evidence of foul play—poison was introduced during the match. With the help of his criminology student Lee Chan (Charlie Chan's son), Moto navigates a web of suspects tied to gambling and corruption, including gangsters, promoters, and bettors who profited from Stanton's demise. The trail leads to a sinister gambling syndicate, and Moto risks his life to unmask the killer before another fight turns deadly. Cast: Peter Lorre as Mr. Kentaro Moto, the sharp-witted and resourceful detective. Keye Luke as Lee Chan, Moto’s enthusiastic student and Charlie Chan’s son, bridging the two detective universes. Dick Baldwin as Bill Steele, the boxer who wins the fatal fight. Harold Huber as Lieutenant Riggs, a brash policeman assisting Moto. Lon Chaney Jr. appears in a bit role before his horror fame, adding a fun footnote for classic film fans. Trivia: Charlie Chan Origins: The film began as "Charlie Chan at the Ringside," starring Warner Oland. When Oland left due to illness (and later died in August 1938), the script was reworked for Mr. Moto. This explains the presence of Keye Luke as Lee Chan and a reference to Charlie Chan in Honolulu. The transition left some Charlie Chan elements intact, making it an unusual entry in Moto’s typically exotic adventures. =========================================================== ☛ "Mr. Moto in Danger Island" (1939) is the sixth and final film in the "Mr. Moto" series, which starred Peter Lorre as the titular character. Aided by a wrestler (Warren Hymer), the Japanese detective (Peter Lorre) nabs diamond smugglers in Puerto Rico. Plot Synopsis: In "Mr. Moto in Danger Island," the action takes place in the fictional Pacific island of San Cristobal. Mr. Moto is assigned to investigate a mysterious death and uncover a smuggling ring operating in the area. The island harbors a wealth of secrets, and Moto’s investigation leads him through a web of deception, danger, and intrigue. Along the way, he encounters a variety of interesting characters, including local officials, treasure hunters, and smugglers, all while trying to outwit the criminal forces at play. Moto’s keen intellect and martial arts expertise allow him to navigate the perils of the island, and he becomes entangled in a battle to stop a dangerous plot that could affect international relations. Stars Peter Lorre and Amanda Duff. Trivia - End of the Series: Danger Island marked the final entry in the Mr. Moto series. The character proved to be popular, but 20th Century Fox chose not to continue with more films following this installment. Exotic Settings: The film, like many of the Mr. Moto series, was set in exotic locations, contributing to the sense of adventure and suspense that made these films appealing to audiences in the late 1930s ========================================================= Otto the 8 Ball Question: Did you have fun on your date go with the 13 ball? Answer: Positively =========================================================== If you'd like to support the channel: Buy Me A Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/BillysJoint Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/billysjoint (great for Paypal) Donate: https://paypal.me/Billysjoint Thumbnail artwork created by Billy Moore Peter Lorre Fun Facts: Alfred Hitchcock was trying to cast a sinister mastermind for his upcoming film, The Man Who Knew Too Much. Lorre and Hitchcock met in London to talk about Hitchcock’s upcoming film. Well, Hitchcock spoke … Lorre mostly just nodded along and smiled. But he had a good reason for his silence. Lorre barely spoke a word of English. By nodding along and laughing a lot, Lorre was able to cover up the fact that he had no idea what Hitchcock was saying. Immediately after M (1931), he received 310 film offers that all contained a similar role. However, he refused most of them in order to try not to get pigeonholed as a psychopath. unfortunately, it didn't always work out that way for him. #crime #mystery #detective
