This week saw the JSE Limited, which operates Africa's biggest stock exchange, warning that its profit for the six months to end-June will be up to 35% lower than in the same period last year. This triggered a painful slump, which wiped out more than R1 billion of its market capitalisation. By late afternoon on Monday, its share price was down almost 10%. On one hand, the price of gold has been gaining momentum while the oil price has been backtracking for a while. On the other hand, the trade wars between the US and China are headed for a truce.
