SAMUDRA PASAI: The First Islamic Kingdom in the Archipelago, Dominating the Strait of Malacca! The history of Samudra Pasai began in the 13th century. At that time, the coastal region of Aceh became an important stopover for ships passing through the Strait of Malacca. Its strategic location enabled this area to develop into a bustling trading center and attract the attention of many nations. According to various historical sources, the figure who founded this kingdom was a nobleman named Merah Silu. He was known as an intelligent leader and wielded significant influence in the northern coastal region of Sumatra before converting to Islam. The Hikayat Raja-Raja Pasai tells the story of Merah Silu meeting with scholars from the Middle East. Through these encounters, he became acquainted with Islamic teachings and ultimately decided to convert to Islam. After converting to Islam, Merah Silu took the title Sultan Malik Al-Saleh. This title marked the birth of an Islamic kingdom, later known as Samudra Pasai, and became the first Islamic kingdom to wield significant influence in the archipelago. As the first sultan, Malik Al-Saleh began establishing a system of government based on Islamic values. He also strengthened ties with Muslim traders from various regions of the world.
