Many people have heard the song that ‘the Chukchi in the choum is waiting for the dawn’. In fact, this is not quite true. The traditional dwelling of this ethnic minority is called ‘yaranga’. And although these structures are similar in many ways, there are a number of important differences. In ancient times building of the ‘yaranga’ was accompanied by rituals resembling a theatrical performance. They tell about careful and respectful attitude of northerners to their home. First of all, a 'narta' sled with family guardian amulets was brought to the site cleared of bushes and snow, and only then they started building the frame.
