Their Morning Café

In the quiet corners of a mountain orphanage, we find beauty in the meager, joy in the shared moment, and the profound strength of the human spirit. Join me for a journey through the "joy and pain" of the Andean heights. The Story Behind the Song: After my home was destroyed by a tornado, I began traveling. One of the first places I visited was a small orphanage in Ecuador. There were about thirty children living there. Government aid amounted to only two hundred pounds of rice a year. An American volunteer used his own Social Security check to help keep the orphanage going, and a donor in Saudi Arabia sent a thousand dollars each year. Each morning I watched the children gather for what they happily called their "morning café"—a cup of warm water with a tablespoon of flour stirred into it. When they finished, each child carefully licked every trace of flour from the inside of the cup. I will never forget those children. Despite their poverty and hunger, they managed to smile.
