A study proves it: if armed with anti-ship missiles, patrol boats like the Brazilian Amazonas-class frigates could defeat a heavy FREMM frigate. And the best part? Doing so for a tiny fraction of the price. Many people ask: "Why does the Brazilian Navy invest so much in patrol boats without missiles or torpedoes, like the Amazonas-class?" The answer is simple. Brazil does not have a separate Coast Guard. Here, the Navy fulfills two functions: First, the primary role of a Navy. Second, the role of "police and firefighters of the seas". This means patrolling to combat crimes on the high seas: illegal fishing, international drug trafficking, piracy, and rescue missions. Because of this dual mission, the budget needs to be divided. On one hand, we have conventional warships, such as the light frigates of the Tamandaré class. Unit cost? Around **R$ 2.8 billion**. On the other hand, we need quantity. Unarmed patrol vessels, much cheaper, to cover our vast coastline fulfilling coast guard missions. The Amazonas-class ocean patrol vessels are the size of a corvette, with a displacement of about *2,000 tons**. But, because they don't have missiles and advanced sensors, they cost only **R$ 325 million**. That's **8 times cheaper* than a Tamandaré frigate. The problem? In a conventional war, these unarmed ships would have an irrelevant role. The most they could do would be to launch naval mines or give an early warning. And look: their radars only have a range of **60km**. This means that, in a real conflict, they would be within range of enemy missiles before even seeing the adversary. But this is where the story changes. A study by Wayne Hughes, one of the leading theorists of modern naval battles, demonstrated something impressive. Three small patrol boats, operating together and armed with missiles, could defeat a FREMM heavy frigate. We're talking about the most powerful frigate in the world: costing R$4.5 billion, with *6,000 tons of displacement* and armed with **8 Exocet MM40 Block 3 missiles**, with a **200km range**.
