Yunnan Journey: Lao Cai - Pingbian - Kaiyuan - Jianshui - Mengzi In this video, I’m sharing my authentic experience of a cross-border trip from Vietnam to Yunnan, China. I’ve kept it as real as possible—sharing the highs and the lows—so you can get a true sense of the journey, whether you’re just curious or planning your own trip. The Journey Begins Our journey started in Hanoi. We were picked up late at night and traveled through the darkness to reach the Lao Cai international border gate by early morning for immigration procedures. From there, we headed into the frontier lands of Yunnan Province. Key Destinations: Pingbian: The largest Miao Autonomous County in Yunnan. We visited Dishui Miao Village, a tourist area inspired by traditional stilt houses built against the mountainsides. Beyond the stunning photo ops, I explored the Miao Herbal Medicine Museum to better understand their unique cultural heritage. Kaiyuan: A vital city in the Honghe Prefecture. Here, we visited Phoenix Ecological Park, often called "Little Europe". Its centerpiece is a European-style clock tower that looks magnificent at sunset, serving as a reminder of the era when the French operated a local mining system. Jianshui: The home of the world-renowned Zitao (Purple Pottery). I explored centuries-old landmarks like the Zhu Family Garden, the former residence of Yunnan's wealthiest family. It still preserves original architecture from hundreds of years ago, bearing the marks of time and the ebb and flow of history. We also experienced Lin'an Old Town, dating back 700 years to the Ming Dynasty, featuring Chaoyang Gate (known as the Little Tiananmen) and bustling ancient streets. Don't miss the Twelve-Eyed Well from the Qing Dynasty, where the 12 openings represent the zodiac animals, and witness the meticulous craftsmanship of handmade Jianshui pottery. Mengzi: The capital of Honghe Prefecture and a former French administrative hub during the tin mining era. Highlights include the Zhuzi Tower in the vast pomegranate orchards and the Bridge-Crossing Noodle Town, a commercial area modeled after ancient Chinese architecture. For lunch, we enjoyed the legendary Bridge-Crossing Noodles, a dish tied to a heartwarming tale of a devoted wife caring for her studious husband. The journey concluded at Beishan Daozhuang (Pottery Castle), where ceramics decorate walls, arches, and pathways to honor the local craft—a perfect spot for memorable photos.
