Clinical manifestation and mortality vary according to the pathogenicity of the virus strain. This pathogenicity can range from very high (velogenic strain), to intermediate (mesogenic strain) to very low (lentogenic strain). Epidemiology Velogenic Viscerotropic – Highly pathogenic, culminating in high mortality rates. Hemorrhagic intestinal and respiratory lesions are frequently observed; Velogenic Neurotropic – A form that presents high mortality and usually shows nervous and respiratory signs; Mesogenic – Presents milder respiratory signs, occasionally nervous symptoms, but with low mortality; Lentogenic or vaccine-related – Presents mild or subclinical respiratory infections; Asymptomatic Enteric Infection – Usually consists of subclinical enteric infection. Clinical Signs The clinical signs described for ND are very similar or identical to other infectious diseases, such as: infectious bronchitis, laryngotracheitis, coryza, chronic respiratory disease, among others, which mainly cause digestive and respiratory symptoms, indistinguishable from ND. Therefore, clinical signs alone do not provide a reliable basis for the diagnosis of ND. Transmission Transmission of NDV by contact through contaminated products or aerosols from infected birds is one of the main ways the ND agent spreads. Birds exhibiting respiratory symptoms excrete viruses in aerosols that can be inhaled by susceptible birds. Similarly, as this virus also replicates at the intestinal level, it can be spread through contaminated feces, through direct ingestion or indirectly through the ingestion of contaminated feed or water, or even by inhalation of small particles produced by dried feces. Some animals, mainly small rodents, insects, and arthropods, which move between infected and susceptible birds, can represent a potential for the spread of ND, mechanically transmitting the virus. Another transmission factor is people through their footwear, clothing, and vehicles. Furthermore, byproducts of infected birds used as raw materials for feed have been a common method of virus spread. Infected pigeons inhabiting feed mills have been cited as responsible for originating most outbreaks of the disease in the third major panzootic in England, contaminating the feed.
