'Football' vs 'Soccer' – WHY the war of words?

Some call it "football" and despise the word "soccer". Those in the “football” camp are likely European, and resent those in the US or elsewhere that simply cannot get the name of their beautiful sport correct. And those that call it "soccer" hate it when people say "football", which to them is a completely different ball game.
