The area flourished and important merchants from Constantinople, Romania and Russia came here and further developed their activities. Papigo is a village in the prefecture of Ioannina, built on the slopes of Tymfi at an altitude of 960 meters. It is also referred to as Megalo Papigo and together with its neighboring village Mikro Papigo. Papigo is one of the most characteristic examples of Zagori architecture and the settlement is declared traditional. Papigo is located very close to the Vikos Gorge and within the Vikos-Aoos National Park. It is surrounded by rich vegetation of deciduous trees, resulting in the area changing colors every season of the year. The area is a tourist attraction throughout the year. The climatic conditions follow the peculiarity of the ecosystem of the national park, with extensive snowfalls in the winter and humidity in the summer. The flora and fauna of the area are very diverse. The impressive formation of Astraka (the peak of Tymfi) contributes to the beautiful image of the settlement with its steep rocks rising impressively above the settlement, reminiscent of towers. A hiking trail starts from Papigo towards the peaks of Tymfi and Drakolimni. A famous spot near the settlement are the swimming pools or "Ovires Rogovou" as their official name is.
