From the terrace of Montepagano, in the province of Teramo, we discuss photography as a tool for interpreting the present, memory, and responsibility. During the conversation, we explore topics that go far beyond technique: the relationship between photography and politics, the importance of culture in shaping an artist, the teachings of Rita Ciprelli, his encounter with Mario Giacomelli, the value of the darkroom and analog photography. Attilio explains how every image must be capable of opening new horizons, offering a perspective on the world, and becoming a tool of cultural resistance. He also reflects on the role of the photographic archive, the importance of reading, watching films, traveling without a specific destination, and cultivating an authentic gaze on reality. Author's Note: Rita Ciprelli was an art historian and poet, as well as the founder of the group referred to, called Stimmung, which also included Giovanni Bucci. The photograph of the sleepers was presented at the exhibition "Caravaggio. The Revolution of Light," which ended on May 2, 2026. The painting to which the photograph was attached is by the 17th-century painter Trophime Bigot (Cupid and Psyche). The theme of the presentation was to juxtapose two images of children as small, defenseless beings, now too often victims of all kinds of violence, culminating in the genocide in Gaza. The inspiration was a phrase uttered by an Israeli diplomat during a televised debate: "Define child." What better definition of a child than these two images, photographic and pictorial, in which the children are naked, defenseless, asleep, dreaming of their difficult, and often impossible, future. "The photographer, ultimately, confronts reality."
