Technology capable of reaching that deadly abyss simply did not exist. It took two world wars, which gave the world sonar and submarines. It took an eccentric Texan oil tycoon who was searching for Noah's Ark and Bigfoot — and who brought aboard the expedition a monkey trained to point its finger at a map. It took a secret US Navy mission to survey sunken nuclear submarines, which became the perfect cover. And it took the brilliant hunch of marine geologist Robert Ballard: to search not for the ship itself, but for the enormous debris field — a comet's tail stretched across the seabed. It was this strategy that reached the goal in a matter of days. The Titanic lay just a couple of hundred metres from the spot where it had recently been searched for.
