OR NOT! 03:53 Why in Galar? 05:58 It's Brilliant Script: Eiscue is a great example of a simple Pokémon. Like how Pidove is a pigeon with a heart on its chest and Seel is a seal with a horn, Eiscue is a penguin with an ice cube on its head… most of the time. Thanks to its Ice Face ability, Eiscue is able to tank one physical attack without taking damage, though it does cause the ice cube to break and it enters is noice face. Get it? Its like “no ice” but they removed the space between the words, so its Noice… y’know. Its how you’d write out someone saying “nice” with an exaggerated British accent. They’re all exaggerated, no one actually talks like that. But its because this Pokémon is Galarian! … sort of! Like the so-called “Galarian” Copperajah, and like the Paldean Quaquaval, they are common in their regions so perfectly fitting in their regional dexes, though their dex entries state that they are from elsewhere. Same with Eiscue. “It drifted in on the flow of ocean waters from a frigid place” “This species rode here on ocean currents from a cold, faraway land.” That makes sense because penguins only live in the southern Hemisphere, Antarctica and its surrounding islands. Though they have been known to ride icebergs out to places they shouldnt be. Including some of the more northern parts of New Zealand and Australia, which were both British colonies… But theyd never go as far north as the UK itself right? They made headlines first in 2011, and then again just a few years ago… and no zoo had any escapees… But it ultimately turned out to be a Guillemot that happened to be walking more like a penguin. But on the topic of British not-penguins, consider the Great Auk, a recently extinct relative of the Guillemot that looks just like them only bigger and more penguiny. And the connection here is fun actually. Where do we get the English word “penguin?” Well it first appears in writings in the 16th century… referring to THIS VERY BIRD! What we now call the Great Auk! The word comes from Welsh, Pen, Gwyn, meaning head and white… the white headed bird. On the other side of the Atlantic They bred mostly on White Head Island, and oh? A penguin-like bird named after its particularly special head??? HMMMM??? Their heads aren't even THAT white, but they did change form! During the warmer months they had two large white spots around their eyes, and in winter the white would grow and even connect into a band… Supposedly. Thats according to reports of sailors, These birds went extinct just before the invention of commercial photography, so while there are sketches and paintings of these birds, even some skeletons and a taxidermy, theres a lot of unknowns about them. But what IS known, is that when British explorers discovered the penguin in antarctica… they named them after this bird, since it looked so similar and was just as flightless… and the rest is history. So there are some zoological explanations for Eiscue being here, but theres another reason that solidifies it even more… the cultural one. Britain of course had many of the worlds first public zoos. In fact the London Zoo founded the concept in the modern world. And Penguins of course have been one of the most popular animals in zoos in the northern hemisphere because they are just so… So it's no wonder that in the decades following the London Zoo getting penguins, Penguin mascots were popping up all over the country. There is a penguin hockey team, a penguin candy bar, clothes line, natural gas mascot, one of the biggest book publishers in the world, and using penguins as the ‘face’ of scientific Antarctic expeditions helped them get the funding they needed to study the frozen continent. In fact most of the earliest scientific expeditions into Antarctica were made by the british. So you could say an Eiscue was just following a Galarian ship that was heading home, or even stowed away.
