We interviewed an 80-year-old man who is earning over 200,000 yen a month, leveraging the unique strengths of being a senior. ■ An 83-Year-Old Top Salesman With a brisk gait, Teruo Tanimura, 83, works as a salesperson for a building equipment installation company in Yokohama City. Arranging his self-made materials, he visits each household using propane gas, encouraging them to switch to city gas. "I visit between 80 and 120 households a day. We announce monthly sales rankings, and I seem to be number one every month." Mr. Tanimura worked for a gas-related company during his working years. Leveraging that experience, he now works nearly 20 days a month and earns over 200,000 yen net per month. When asked about his secret to sales success, he replied as follows: "I constantly think about how customers feel when they receive a sales pitch, and act accordingly. It's a painstaking sales process, aiming to turn even a slight 'no' into a 'yes'." Currently, there's an increasing number of seniors, like Ms. Tanimura, who want to continue working after retirement. Nearly 40% of seniors responded that they want to do work that provides income. Self-employed (60s) "As long as I'm able to move, I'm fine with any age." ■Senior-Specialized Staffing Agencies Ms. Tanimura is employed by a staffing agency in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, specializing in seniors, aptly named "Koureisha" (Elderly Company). Registration is generally required to be 65 years of age or older and a retired person. Fumio Muraseki (70), President of Koureisha (a company specializing in elderly workers): "The average age of our registered workers is 72.8 years old. When we try to dispatch younger people, for example, there are concerns about whether they understand basic rules and manners. However, with elderly workers, there are absolutely no such concerns, making them immediately valuable assets." Another strength of elderly workers is their willingness to handle early morning work, which younger people tend to avoid. A man in his 70s, dispatched to a rental car company, works three days a week, starting at 8:00 AM and working about seven hours a day, earning approximately 150,000 yen per month.
