In this in-depth unboxing and first test, I take a close look at this, admittedly, unique and innovative hybrid radio — one that combines traditional radio (FM, MW, SW) with full-featured internet radio in a way we’ve never quite seen before. 📦 This radio was kindly supplied by Choyong for review. The Choyong LC90 isn’t just another internet radio — it’s also a shortwave, medium wave, and FM receiver. This first-of-its-kind combination opens up interesting possibilities for both traditional radio listeners and modern streamers. But how well does it actually perform in real-world use? 🎧 INTERNET RADIO – Smooth, Intuitive, and Full of Features The internet radio side of the LC90 is genuinely impressive. Navigation is easy, and the interface is smooth and responsive. Some features that stood out during my testing include: ⭐ Favourites button for quick access to saved stations 🌍 Country lists that let you browse global stations with ease 🎵 Music and 📰 News buttons for fast genre filtering 🎙️ Podcast button — though oddly, it mostly lists regular stations rather than true podcasts ➕ Ability to add your own custom stations, which is a huge plus! 📻 TRADITIONAL RADIO – Mixed Performance Across the Bands While the internet side shines, how does the LC90 handle traditional radio? FM: Decent performance. Local stations come in clear and strong, but sensitivity to distant FM stations is limited. SW (Shortwave): Surprisingly, very good! The radio is sensitive and quiet on SW, picking up a lot with very little noise. I used the MLA30+ loop antenna for testing, and it performed beautifully. MW (Medium wave): Unfortunately, this is the radio’s weak point. Even strong local MW signals suffer from internal noise and poor clarity. 💬 OVERALL THOUGHTS: A Brave and Bold Radio Concept The Choyong LC90 is a bold step into the future of radio. It's the first time we’ve seen this kind of hybrid approach — and while it doesn’t get everything perfect (especially on MW), it’s a fascinating device. ✅ Great for internet radio fans who still want access to FM, SW, and MW on the same device ✅ Shortwave DXers will appreciate the SW sensitivity and smooth operation, plus internet radio ✅ Priced at $249 on Amazon (original list price was $299) — it's not cheap, but it delivers something very different from anything else on the market This is a brave move by Choyong, and while the concept isn’t perfect, it works well enough to be very compelling. Of course, it will be much cheaper to buy an internet radio and a SW/MW/FM radio separately, but that is not the point here. The point is one device that does it all.
