How I colonized my colonizer

What happens when the country that colonized your ancestors turns out to have been colonized too? I went to Spain to confront my colonizer, then realized I might be colonizing them back. In this cinematic Spain video essay, I travel through Andalucía to explore Al-Andalus, the Reconquista, Granada, the Alhambra, Christopher Columbus, and the history of colonization that shaped both Spain and Latin America. But this is not just a history documentary. It is also about modern tourism, digital nomads, gentrification, anti-tourism protests in Barcelona, and whether Spain is being colonized again through globalization and rising housing costs. As an Ecuadorian-American mestizo, I grew up seeing Spain as the colonizer. But walking through Islamic Spain, Moorish architecture, Catholic conquest, Spanish empire history, and modern tourist cities made the story more complicated. Spain was conquered, became a conqueror, and now faces a new kind of conquest driven by economics, travel, global brands, and people like me. Part travel documentary, part cultural analysis, and part personal story, this episode explores old colonialism vs new colonialism, Latin American identity, mestizo identity, Spanish culture, tourism in Spain, and the uncomfortable question of whether we can travel without becoming part of the problem. Topics covered: Spain history, Al-Andalus, Reconquista, Islamic Spain, Muslim rule in Spain, Moorish Spain, Granada, Alhambra, Christopher Columbus, Spanish Empire, colonization of Latin America, Ecuadorian identity, mestizo identity, Latin American identity, tourism in Spain, Barcelona anti-tourism protests, digital nomads in Spain, gentrification, globalization, neo-colonialism, Andalucía travel, Spanish culture, travel video essay, history documentary, and cinematic vlog. The Social Script is a cinematic video essay series exploring identity, history, culture, migration, globalization, and the invisible forces shaping modern life. #Spain #Colonization #VideoEssay #Andalucia #Granada #Alhambra #Reconquista #Gentrification #Barcelona #TravelDocumentary
