Not vaguely. With statistical confidence precise enough to publish in peer-reviewed journals at Harvard Medical School. If you carry a surname like Sharma, Patel, Singh, Iyer, Yadav, Rajput, Reddy, Nair, or Desai, population geneticists working with genome-wide data from seventy-three separate Indian population groups can look at your family name and already have a working hypothesis about which ancient migration your paternal ancestors descended from, how genetically isolated your community has been for the last two thousand years, and which hereditary disease risks are elevated in your specific surname group at rates that do not appear in the broader Indian population at all. This is the direct genetic consequence of one of the most extraordinary demographic experiments in the entire history of the human species. In 2013, Priya Moorjani and her colleagues at Harvard Medical School published a study in the American Journal of Human Genetics analyzing genome-wide data from seventy-three Indian population groups and found something no historian had ever been able to prove from documents alone. Before roughly four thousand years ago, major genetic mixture between different ancestral populations was common across the subcontinent.
