A seriously ill man wants to die with dignity – with the help of an assisted suicide organization. But it ends in disaster. Because politicians have so far been unable to reach an agreement, such organizations operate largely unregulated. The Federal Constitutional Court ruled in 2020 that a ban on "commercial euthanasia" is unconstitutional. This means that there is a right to self-determined death. The Bundestag is called upon to establish rules that specify the conditions under which it is permitted and the conditions under which it is not. However, no draft bill has yet gained a majority, and all proposals have failed. This legal loophole leaves a sometimes intolerable situation for the seriously ill and their families, as two cases in Kontrovers – Die Story demonstrate. While euthanasia in the form of assisted suicide is possible, there are hardly any regulations regarding the procedure and counseling. Those affected ultimately feel abandoned.
