D'Atra Hicks - Something About You (1989) HQ smooth Funk/Soul ballad (Pro. Narada Michael Walden)
Only Uploads From Original CD's & Vinyl in HQ ! D'Atra Hicks (born Deitra M. Hicks; December 27, 1967) is an American actress and singer with a five-octave range. Since the age of four, D'Atra has been singing in her grandfather's church in Harlem, New York (her musical influences include Aretha Franklin and Patti Labelle). Singing every Sunday, she eventually at 16 was the star in their young adult choir. Around this time D'Atra, and her older sister Miriam formed a duo. Known as The Hicks Sisters, they sang in talent shows and church activities around the city, raising enough money to record a 7'' single "The Answer Is Christ" for M&D Good Gospel Records in 1984. Grenoldo Frazier, then Music Director of "Mama I Want To Sing", heard the record and contacted them to audition for the production. D'Atra Hicks auditioned for "Mama I Want To Sing" (which have become the most succesful non-Braodway black musical in theatre history), and the production's writer/producer Vy Higginsen hired Hicks as a choir member of the emsamble. Hicks eventually became the star of the show and went on to play the lead role of Doris Winter. The show provided Hicks with a forum to grow as a performer and to be seen by audiances around the world, including Europe and Japan. The turning point in D'Atra's musical career occurred when the show came to Los Angeles. Alex Hodges, Vice President of the music division at ICM, was in the audiance. Hodges was so impressed that he returned for the next 20 nights, with a different person in tow each time, to hear D'Atra. One of the first of those people was Bruce Lundvall (then East Coast General Manager, Capitol Records / President Blue Note Records). By Intermission D'Atra Hicks was signed to Capitol Records and began working on a LP that took over a year to make, produced by Grammy award-winning Narada Michael Walden, Nick Martinelli, Jellybean Benitez and Elliott Wolfe. The result is a well-rounded album of Pop and R&B that ulliminates the best of all of D'Atra's tremendous talents. Here's a track of the album.
