Listening to the sound of rain, during the season of Hangeshō (Sōsho summer period). While watching Annabelle hydrangeas and beautiful panicle hydrangeas gradually shift from white to green, I created white-and-green container plantings using three varieties of Madagascar periwinkle. Between the breaks in the rainy season, I spent a little time working in the garden. This time, instead of my usual plant “gathering” style arrangements, I used a very simple approach—just placing the plants and enjoying the composition as it is. A small summer garden made entirely of white flowers and greenery. In the height of summer, when plants tend to grow densely, a simple design can feel especially calming and comfortable. Standard Madagascar periwinkle A planting with ‘Sunny Princess’ and pentas A planting using ‘Screw Chouchou’ Each arrangement is complemented with small white flowers and foliage plants, designed into small summer garden scenes in black planters and tin containers. In the second half, I also share moments of simple food-based seasonal living—such as onion koji, Juneberry fruit vinegar, and rice flour scones. Even in busy everyday life, taking time to care for the gifts of nature seems to bring a small richness into our daily lives.
