Can the collapse be stopped? A 10-year trial construction project has begun on the World Heritage Site, Gunkanjima. The project involves Building 70 (elementary and junior high school), a reinforced concrete structure constructed in 1958. The building has been exposed to sea breezes and salt damage for many years. Starting in late August 2025, 11 companies will begin implementing 17 repair methods, and monitoring will be conducted over the next 10 years. Based on the results, the most appropriate repair method for Gunkanjima will be determined. Can this decaying World Heritage site be protected? This is a record of a historic first step.
