July 14, 2026 (Tuesday) Central Disaster Management Council On July 14, 2026, Prime Minister Takaichi held the 46th Central Disaster Management Council meeting at the Prime Minister's Official Residence. The meeting discussed revisions to the Basic Disaster Management Plan, among other matters. Based on today's discussions, the Prime Minister made the following statement: (Prime Minister Takaichi) Thank you very much for attending the Central Disaster Management Council meeting today despite your busy schedules. Japan is one of the world's most disaster-prone countries. In order to protect the lives and livelihoods of our citizens from disasters, we must unite all forces from industry, government, academia, and the public and work with all our might to realize a "disaster-resilient nation." Just yesterday, the "Law Related to the Establishment of the Disaster Management Agency" was enacted. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed to this. Based on this law, we will establish the "Disaster Management Agency" within the year, which will serve as the command center for consistent disaster response from peacetime to the time of the disaster, and through to recovery and reconstruction. We will then fundamentally strengthen the government's disaster management system. I ask Minister Akama and all other ministers to steadily implement today's decisions and to thoroughly review various disaster countermeasures to fully commit to "further strengthening disaster response capabilities." Furthermore, this "Central Disaster Management Council" plays a crucial role in deliberating on important matters concerning disaster prevention. I also ask for the continued cooperation of the members from designated public institutions and academic experts, from their respective professional positions, toward "further strengthening disaster response capabilities."
