Despotate of Epirus Summarized 1205-1479 FULL

The Despotate of Epirus was a dynamic Roman state set up post 1204 in Epirus, Thessaly (and expanded into Macedonia as the Empire of Thessaloniki) by the Komnenos Doukas Dynasty, an early contender to retake Constantinople from the Crusaders for they were perfectly situated between Rhomania and the Latin West, being an amalgamation of the best tactics of both worlds. After the Empire of Nicaea won the race for the Queen of Cities in 1261, the Despotate of Epirus vehemently resisted Palaiologan tutelage, especially in Thessaly, until they finally gave out in 1318 and became engulfed by the Latins of Frankish Greece and the imperial agents of Constantinople, ending the Komnenodoukas story. Even after 1318, the legacy of the Komnendoukai loomed large, as the form of Despotate remained in Epirus until the end of the Middle Ages, whether it was under Italian, Serbian, or Albanian domination. After narrating the reconquest of Epirus for the Roman Empire under Andronikos III Palaiologos, the trajectory of the region and its local rulers (Nemanjic, Angelos-Philanthropenos, Prelubovic, Shpata, Buondelmonti and Tocco dynasties) is quickly covered, for those curious in the life of the Despotate until the Fall of Vonitsa in 1479. This video is the entirety of the history of the Despotate of Epirus summarized, compiled from my previous videos on the Roman exile and Palaiologan era from Eastern Rome Summarized.
