On May 13, 1647, a massive earthquake struck Santiago, leaving thousands dead and hundreds of structures destroyed. Amidst the devastation, a crucified Christ, originally known as "the Lord of Agony," miraculously remained intact, with the unusual feature that its crown of thorns inexplicably slid down to its neck. This event was interpreted as a divine sign, and a procession was organized, which continues to this day, for the protection of the city.
