GEAR VENDORS provides an overdrive product to race cars and trucks up to 2,000 hp. This product is particularly well suited to the special demands of Drag Week competition which require both quarter mile performance and long distance driving through often-times challenging terrain with limited access to fuel. As explained by Gear Vendor's Nick Johnson, the 1,000 hp+ guys primarily use the product for on-road driving to lower RPM at cruise and to allow gear splitting in mountainous terrain. The overdrive feature lowers engine rpm and increases fuel economy. This can be critically important during Drag Week as the rural routes specified often have long stretches between gas stations. Range is the real issue, not fuel cost. Gear splitting is also important as racing transmission typically have high stall torque converters. These converters will slip going up and down steep grades making climbing difficult and offering minimal help holding back on the downhill side all the while causing transmission fluid temperatures to climb. Vehicles running at lower power levels will also benefit from gear splitting on the track. A two speed PowerGlide is transformed into a 4 speed by adding one of these units thereby allowing the engine to stay firmly planted in its power zone for the entire quarter mile. Borowski Race Engines, Inc.'s Whipple supercharged LS engines are popular for Pro Touring. The 2.9L size supercharged engine is rated at 1,075 hp while the 4.5L version weighs in at 1,275 hp. We typically supply these with 4L80e transmissions custom-made for us by Hughes Performance. For these vehicles, a 3.50:1 rear end gear ratio might be ideal for quarter mile passes but is too high for highway driving. With a GearVendors unit, the highway RPM can be brought down by 28% thereby improving fuel economy and range.
