qEEG and Neurofeedback: :Breakthrough Applications in Neuroscience
qEEG and Neurofeedback: Breakthrough Applications in Neuroscience that Lead to Improved Diagnosis and Treatment of Emotional, Behavioral and Learning Issues James Cooney, LCSW May 11, 2022 10:00 a.m. to Noon Wilton Library The use of sophisticated technology to intervene and improve brain function is just beginning. It promises a transformation in practice in many fields: education, rehabilitation, neurology, psychiatry, and psychology. Qualitative Electroencephalography (qEEG) is the process of recording the brain’s electrical activity across the scalp and then comparing it to a widely used database of similar recordings of same-age/gender individuals without symptoms of dysfunction. This allows us to identify and image very specific locations and types of dysregulated brain activity leading to improved diagnosis and treatment recommendations. Neurofeedback is the direct training of the brain to improve the regulation of its activity in these identified areas, leading to enhanced functioning. In this presentation, James Cooney, LCSW, a clinical social worker whose specialties include ADHD, LD, anxiety, depressive disorders, developmental trauma and anger management, will provide an overview of these related technologies and their use in refining the diagnosis and treatment of attentional, emotional and behavioral difficulties that impact children’s learning.
