(Full Episode) - On the Front Lines with Hugo Clément February 17, 2025 Hugo Clément reveals the unexpected consequences of melting glaciers. For example, in June 2024, the hamlet of La Bérarde, in Isère, was devastated in just a few hours by terrible floods. The cause of this catastrophe: a glacial lake suddenly emptied, carrying away cubic meters of mountain with it. In Chamonix, the rapid melting of the Mer de Glace glacier releases rocks and sediments that clog the water intakes of the EDF hydroelectric power plant. Throughout the country, the melting of permafrost is causing landslides in the mountains. Over a century ago, a pocket of water in a glacier suddenly emptied, killing 175 people in the commune of Saint-Gervais. On the Tête Rousse glacier, the source of the disaster, a team of scientists is trying to locate new pockets of water that once again threaten the valley. The search is complex, and every effort must be made to prevent a repeat of this tragedy.
