However, if you've researched the history of Jiu-Jitsu, you've probably seen photos where the great master Hélio Gracie appears wearing a blue belt, far from his actual rank. In this video I explain the two main historical reasons that led the master to wear this belt. The first reason stems from the original grading system that Count Koma brought from Japan to Brazil in 1914. At that time, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu used only three belts: white for students, dark blue for instructors, and light blue for Jiu-Jitsu masters. This system lasted for more than 50 years in Brazil, from 1914 until 1967, when the first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu federation, the Guanabara Jiu-Jitsu Federation, was founded. It was only then that they instituted the belt system similar to what we have today: white, blue, purple, brown, black, and red. Therefore, photos of Master Hélio Gracie with a blue belt prior to 1967 are from the old BJJ grading system. The second reason occurred after the jiu-jitsu boom in the 1990s, when Royce Gracie won the UFC and Rickson Gracie dominated in Japan. With jiu-jitsu spreading worldwide, many people wanted to be promoted quickly, and in the eyes of Master Hélio Gracie, this trivialization of the black belt was unfair. As a form of protest against these rapid promotions in BJJ, the great master returned to wearing the blue belt he used before the current system was instituted. It is said that the famous phrase attributed to Hélio Gracie, that the belt is for tying up your pants, was uttered during this time. In 2009, after the master's death, Royce Gracie also wore a blue belt for a time as a tribute to his father.
