Comment your favorite color & subscribe for more kids’ sewing ideas! ⸻ Materials (short) • Medium-weight fabric (corduroy / brushed cotton / wool-blend) for warmth • Lightweight lining for skirt (optional) • Fusible interfacing for yoke/collar/button placket • Matching thread, buttons (3–4), 1 small hook/eye (optional) • Elastic (small for sleeve cuff if using), measuring tape, scissors, pins Pieces to cut (add 1 cm seam allowance) • Front bodice (with center front opening) — 1 on fold OR 2 pieces (CF seam) • Back bodice — 2 (or 1 on fold if no back opening) • Front yoke ruffle layers — 2 strips (inner + outer ruffle) — length = 2.5× neck curve each • Back yoke strip (under ruffles) — 1 on fold or 2 • Skirt panels — 2 wide panels (total width ≈ 3–4× waist for fullness) • Sleeves — 2 long sleeves (gather top cap) • Neck facing / collar band — narrow strip • Button placket / front facing — narrow strips • Optional lining pieces for skirt Cutting tips (short) • Cut yoke & ruffles from same fabric or contrast for detail. • Use interfacing on button placket and yoke base for crisp ruffles. • For winter, choose corduroy or brushed cotton and consider a thin lining for skirt. Stitching Steps — Short & Camera-Ready 1. Mark & prepare pieces: Notch CF, shoulder points, sleeve caps, ruffle center. 2. Make ruffles: Hem ruffle edges (narrow) if desired. Run two parallel gathering stitches across each ruffle strip; gather evenly to match yoke width. 3. Assemble yoke: Attach inner ruffle to yoke base (right side). Then attach outer ruffle above it so layered ruffles overlap neatly. Press. Add interfacing behind yoke base. 4. Bodice assembly: Sew shoulder seams (RS together). Attach yoke (with ruffles) to front bodice — pin carefully so gathers sit even. 5. Neck finish: Attach neck facing or collar band; understitch facing so it stays inside. 6. Front opening: Attach button plackets/facings to center front, topstitch. Make buttonholes and sew buttons (photos close-up). 7. Sleeves: Sew sleeve seams, hem cuffs or create small casing for elastic for winter snug fit. Gather sleeve cap and set into armhole. 8. Skirt panels: Sew side seams of panels, finish hem. Run gathering stitch on top edge, gather to match bodice lower edge. 9. Join skirt & bodice: Pin RS together, stitch, finish seam allowances (serge or zigzag), press. 10. Hem & final: Hem skirt evenly. Attach any lace trim to ruffle edges if shown.
