China’s Zhejiang Province isn’t born a gentle water town. One side is postcard-perfect—stone bridges, calm canals, fishing boats at dusk. The other battles flash floods, surging tides, and rugged mountains. As shown in the opening scenes, Zhejiang’s waterways are dense and complex. Switch from a flat map to a 3-D view and you’ll see why it differs from its Jiangnan neighbor, Jiangsu: steep peaks, short rivers, and fast torrents that bring relentless challenges. Not every challenge is a mega-project like the Three Gorges Dam or the South-to-North Water Diversion. Sometimes it’s as simple as reinforcing a seawall or dredging a small river. Yet thousands of these “small” efforts transformed flood-stricken land into today’s peaceful Jiangnan water towns, and turned the roaring Qiantang tidal bore into one of China’s most breathtaking sights. This is the story of Zhejiang and water—a living example of China’s centuries-old fight to tame the floods.
