The Good, the Bad and the... Confusing of Nakai TAB notation for Native Flute
Native American Flute music has not been not written down historically. But now, the flute is used in many different and non-traditional forms of music making. So some form of notation seems useful, perhaps even necessary. Nakai TAB is probably the most familiar NAF notation system for players of the instrument. R C Nakai, who can be credited with much of the cross-over interest in the Native American Flute, developed this way of notating music for the instrument. He describes it as a TAB system, even though it is based on Euro-Classical notation, which is not a TAB system. This video looks at Nakai TAB, what it is supposed to do for us, its strengths and weaknesses. Many players of the instrument do not read Euro-Classical notation at all, so I’ve made every effort to do this without getting overly technical.
