BACT/ALERT Blood Culture Collection: Needle and Syringe draw method

Overview: This video describes the steps needed to collect and inoculate BACT/ALERT blood culture bottles using the Needle and Syringe draw method. Steps Included: 1. Identify the patient. 2. Have all the necessary supplies within reach. 3. Inspect bottles and remove the flip-top and clean the septum. 4. Assemble the syringe and safety needle device. 5. Select and clean the venipuncture site. 6. Perform the venipuncture. 7. Aspirate the appropriate amount of blood. 8. Hold a gauze over the puncture site and remove the needle from the vein. 9. Activate the safety device. 10. Remove the needle from the syringe and discard the needle into a sharps container. 11. Attach the safety transfer device to the syringe. 12. Inoculate the Anaerobic bottle first, then the Aerobic bottle and finally any additional tubes if required. 13. Discard the transfer device and syringe into a sharps container. 14. Invert the bottles 3-5 times. 15. Label with patient information. 16. Bandage patient arm. 17. Place bottles and tubes into a biohazard bag and transport to the lab. Let's get started!
