After losing 1-0 in the first leg, Pumas faced an experienced Cruz Azul side, managed by the legendary Nacho Trelles. However, the grit and talent of the university team, especially Hugo Sánchez, shone brightly. Hugo, who was studying dentistry at UNAM, had already attracted the attention of Atlético de Madrid, the club that signed him before the end of the season. He knew this final would be his farewell with Pumas, which made every moment on the field even more special.
